Description
English: NSWR W Thow 'Australian Standard Consolidation' Class D55 2-8-0 No.5595 at Trainworks, the New South Wales Railway Museum, Thirlmere, 31 March 2016. Thow designed the Australian Standard Consolidation as a freight version of his Class C32 4-6-0. It consisted of three classes: Class D50 (ex-T524), 280 built 1896-1912 with unsuperheated Belpaire biolers (superheated after 1912) and Allan valve gear (withdrawn 1939-73); Class D53 (ex-TF939), 190 built 1912-17 with (mostly) superheated Belpair tapered boilers, larger fireboxes, withdrawn 1939-73; D55 (ex-K1353), 120 built (300 planned!) 1918-25, with Southern valve gear, rocking grates, withdrawn 1954-67. In addition, 10 D50's intended for the NSWR were commandeered by the British ROD and served in France in WWI, after which they went to Belgium. Also 8 similar K Class (with slightly larger boilers) were built for the Commonwealth Railways in 1916 and withdrawn in 1952, and 26 unsuperheated (6 later superheated) Ka Class in 1918-20, withdrawn in 1951-52. And 10 2-8-2T version were built in 1912-25 for the East Greta Railway, withdrawn in 1959-87 - the last commercially working steam loos in Australia, They were built by Beyer Peacock, Neilson Reid, Dubs, North British, Clyde Engineering and NSWR Eveleigh.
