While there he wrote The Wonder Book,which boys and girls have read with delight ever since. 142 New England Each day he went with his children, Una and Julian,to a farmhouse half a mile distant for milk along aroad that he called The Milky Way ; and he used to play with themflying kites,went nuttingand climbingtrees, madeboats for themto sail on thelake, tookthem fishingand flower-gathering, andtried to teachthem to swim.In winter hewas their com-panion incoasting, andin building apalace of snowwith ice win-dows. Yet hewas so shywith strangers that he would jump a fence to avoidmeeting them on the highway.
