Summary

Description
English: This is a photograph of a brazier from the Episcopal Cathedral Church of Saint Matthew, Dallas, Texas. The brazier is used at the Easter Vigil. The brazier is small - only slightly larger than a frying pan - and a small fire is made in the center of it. This fire is used to light the Paschal candle at the beginning of the service.

Traditional use: Prior to the service, cotton and small pieces of dry wood are placed inside the small bowl of the brazier. A small vial of scented oil, a piece of flint, and a knife to strike the flint are placed near the brazier. The brazier should be near the entry of the church. A small amount of scented oil is poured onto the cotton and wood. The bishop or someone appointed strikes a knife onto a piece of flint, sending sparks into the bowl of the brazier. This fire is referred to as new fire, and is pure - not lit by match or lighter, but having originated in the brazier. The new fire from the brazier is used to light the Paschal candle. If practical, the candle is turned upside down and its wick placed directly in the new fire. If not practical, a taper is used to carry the new fire to the Paschal candle.

This is my photograph that I took and you are welcome to it.
