DescriptionNational Academy of Engineering Class of 2007.jpg
English: The National Academy of Engineering 2007 Class includes Tim Berners-Lee (in 2nd row, 2nd person to the left of center, gray jacket maroon shirt) and Simon S. Lam (in 2nd row, 2nd person to the right of center, white shirt purple tie). Berners-Lee co-invented the World Wide Web (WWW). Lam led a research group at the University of Texas at Austin that invented secure sockets and prototyped in 1993 the first secure sockets layer (named Secure Network Programming) for securing Internet applications in general, including WWW, email, etc. These Internet applications use the HTTPS protocol, consisting of HTTP running over a secure sockets layer (such as, TLS 1.3 in 2021), which can be upgraded from time to time for improved security.
