d gray NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE, Born July 4, 1S04; Died 1864. CHldren, as well as grown folks, like to readbooks that are written in simple, direct language, and this is the charm of Hawthornes story-books.The old Greek stories are told over again inplain, short English words, and they are so welltold that they seem like new and beautiful fairystories. The Wonder Book is indeed one ofthe best fairy books ever written for children.Hawthornes own children knew nearly everyone of the stories by heart before the book wasprinted, and one of them, his boy Julian, who isnow a man, and himself a writer, says that theystill linger in his memory. The writing of thisbook gave Hawthorne great enjoyment, as everypage of it is bright and cheery, while some ofhis books written before this had seemed rathergloomy. If there are any children living todaywho have not yet read The Wonder Book theyhave a rich treasure to enjoy. The GoldenTouch,^ The Pomegranate Seeds, The Pyg-mies are some of the stories. (52)
