Bahasa Indonesia: Museum Nasional Indonesia, juga disebut sebagai Museum Gajah, dibangun pada tahun 1862 oleh pemerintah Hindia-Belanda di jalan Koningsplein West (kini Medan Merdeka). Museum yang kemudian dibuka pada tahun 1868 ini menerima julukan "Museum Gajah" oleh karena patung gajah perunggu dari Raja Chulalongkorn (Rama 5) yang diletakkan di halaman depan museum tersebut.
Dari tahun 1868 hingga tahun 1962, museum tersebut dikelola oleh Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen (yang mengubah namanya menjadi Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia setelah kemerdekaan). Pada tanggal 17 September 1962, Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia menyerahkan Museum Gajah kepada pemerintah Indonesia yang menetapkannya sebagai "Museum Pusat" sebelum meningkatkan statusnya menjadi "Museum Nasional" berdasarkan Surat Keputusan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan, No.092/ 0/1979 tertanggal 28 Mei 1979.
