Description

Christ with crown of thorns. Blood is flowing from a wound in his right side. Limestone, traces of paint. Fragment of a crucifix, which was placed in July 1399 on the base of the Well of Moses in the courtyard of the carthusian monastry of Champmol in Dijon. It was separated from this monument at the end of the 18th century (presumably before the Revolution).

The Christ with crown of thorns was found during the 19th century built into a wall in Dijon and was later placed in the Dijon Musée archéologique. The crucifix was originally accompanied by statues of Mary, John and Mary Magdalen (now lost). According to G. Troescher possibly executed by Jean de Prindale after a design by Sluter. The statues were polychromated under Jean Malouel.
