Description |
English: A view of the attack on Muros Fort by HMS La Loire, commanded by Captain Frederick Lewis Maitland (1777-1839), on 4 June 1805. Napoleonic Wars (1803-15).
Maitland was accompanied, on the 46-gun Loire, by Lieutenant James (later Sir James) Lucas Yeo (1782-1818), who captured the French privateer Confiance during this lightning raid on Fort Muros, south of Cape Finisterre on the north-west coast of Spain. This view is not described in Parker. Nelson's coat of arms, which is engraved in the bottom margin, lacks the major part of the augmentation, granted to him as Baron Nelson of the Nile in 1798, having a chief undulated argent, but lacking thereon waves of the sea with a palm tree between a disabled ship on the dexter side and a battery in ruins on the sinister, all proper. The motto 'Palmam qui meruit ferat' is also lacking. Thomas Buttersworth (1768-1842) (artist and publisher) [bottom left, below edge of view:] Buttersworth Del.; [bottom centre, below title:] London.
