Summary

Description

This mural is a portrait of contemporary Mexico, from the murder of presidential candidate Colosio (at the far left, earlier shot, to corrupt and reviled ex-president Carlos Salinas de Gortari, to El Papa himself, and finally the working class and families.

The death of Colosio, Salinas' hand picked replacement, is seen by some as the beginning of the end of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) as the exclusive ruling party in mexico for the first time since like the '20's or something. PRI lost the presidency to, sadly another right wing corporatist party called the National Action Party (PAN). Breaking the lock PRI had on the country forever is but one recent, among the many steps Mexican people have taken in the ongoing struggle against the tiny oligarchy of hyper-rich business people that continue to bleed their country.

Check out these links for more on this bit of Mexican history (a totally fascinating subject).
