Description
English: Edict of the city authorities of Berne, declaring a devaluation of the Batzen (cheap copper coins) by 50%. The document is dated November 22, 1652 (old style, December 2, 1652 new style), and was published by reading it to the population from the pulpit on November 28. The edict defined a term of only three days, until November 30, 1652, to exchange the copper Batzen at the old rate into more stable gold or silver coins. This devaluation was the immediate cause for the outbreak of the Swiss peasant war of 1653.
Date December 2, 1652 (Gregorian); November 22, 1652 (Julian)
