Provenance:(e) Nellie Conway Madison, sister of James Madison, who married Major Isaac Hite, of "Belle Grove," Meadow Mills, Virginia brought the portrait to "Belle Grove"; (e) her son, James Madison Hite, Sr. (e) his son, James Madison Hite, Jr. (e) his son, Drayton Meade Hite; (e) Mrs. Drayton Meade Hite; (e) presented by her, January 1923, to the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore; (f) purchased from the Maryland Historical Society by the National Trust for Belle Grove, (g) later renamed Belle Grove Plantation, Middletown, Virginia.
