Heading along the Black Country Route towards Morrisons.
The second panel depicts mining. In the top section, pit-head gear can be seen silhoutted against the landscape on the left. The section below shows a view of a mine from above ground, with pit-head gear extending up into the top section on the right. Underneath, three men are shown working underground. One of them is using a drill to mine the coal. The third panel is an imaginative design that the artist titled the Creatation of the Black Country. A figure of a man pouring metal in a foundry extends over the bottom two sections on the left-hand side. The molten metal is transformed into the smoking chimneys of the Black Country on the right of the relief. Above the man's head, three stars appear within an abstract, cloud-like form. At night, the work is lit up from inside, emphassing the silhouettes of the figures. At the top of the tower is a metal weathervane with a small figure of a man striking an anvil. |
