Morphine should not be administered if there is advanced respiratory insufficiency or a severe head injury. The normal dose is a single syrette administered via intramuscular injection, after which the letter "M" is written on the forehead of the patient with a black felt tip pen, prior to evacuation to the field hospital.
Note:- it is highly dangerous to administer more than one morphine syrette over a short period of time due to the risk of overdose. Two syrettes can be administered in quick succession, but only for palliative care i.e. the patient is so severely wounded that there is no realistic prospect of their survival. Such a scenario would only ever occur with hopeless cases during the most extreme wartime conditions.
