The inscription reads:
Monmouth School
On this site William Jones, Citizen and Haberdasher of London founded this School A.D. 1615. His original School House was demolished A.D. 1865 and these buildings erected, the first stone being laid by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. This entrance was closed in 1961 upon replacement by the adjoining wrought iron gates salvaged from the Haberdashers' Hall in the City of London, destroyed by enemy action A.D. 1941.
