Summary

Description
English: Modesty (detail),1833, marble, Jean-Louis Jaley. Jaley, winner of the prix de Rome in 1872, sculpted this delicate youg female nude as a mandatory assignment in his fourth and fith years. He returns to the ancient theme of Venus in her bath, and handles the drapery which hides as much it reveals the female form, with great refinement. The soft features of the face and elongated body are typical of the artist's work.
