Summary

Description
English: Diagram illustrating why mirrors reverse left and right but not up and down. A viewer (V) is observing an object both directly (A) and its image (I) reflected in a mirror (M). The mirror itself does not reverse left and right or up and down, it reverses back to front. The mirror image of an object faces the opposite direction to the original object. In order to view the front side of the statue in the mirror the viewer must rotate the statue (A) so it faces the mirror as shown at (B). The object is rotated about a vertical axis, and this is the cause of the left - right reversal observed in the image. In the statue A observed directly, the cat is raising its right paw, while in the image I it is raising its left paw.

This makes it consistent with the other drawing in this series: File:Mirror_image_reversal_-_viewer_rotation.svg
