THE MEMBERS ARE SHOWN IN CREWS OF TWO WITH THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF EACH MIDGET SUBMARINE SEATED IN THE FRONT ROW WITH HIS CREW MEMBER STANDING BEHIND HIM. FRONT ROW - OFFICERS, FROM THE RIGHT: LIEUTENANT KATSUSUKE IWASE - DIED IN THE DIEGO SUAREZ ATTACK; LIEUTENANT COMMANDER MASAHARU OOTA WHO, ALTHOUGH A MEMBER OF THE DIEGO SUAREZ ATTACK GROUP, DID NOT TAKE PART DUE TO PROBLEMS SUFFERED BY HIS SUBMARINE ON THE WAY TO THE TARGET - HE WAS LATER LOST, PRESUMED DEAD, WHEN, AS A CREW MEMBER ON ONE OF THREE JAPANESE SUBMARINES DESPATCHED TO OPERATE WITH GERMAN SUBMARINE FORCES IN THE ATLANTIC, HIS SUBMARINE WAS SUNK IN THE BAY OF BISCAY; COMMANDER KEIU MATSUO - DIED IN THE ATTACK ON SYDNEY HARBOUR; COMMANDER SABUROO AKIEDA - DIED IN THE ATTACK ON DIEGO SUAREZ; COMMANDER KENSHI CHUUMA - DIED IN THE ATTACK ON SYDNEY HARBOUR; LIEUTENANT TEIJI YAMAKI WHO, ALTHOUGH A MEMBER OF THE SYDNEY ATTACK GROUP, DID NOT TAKE PART BECAUSE OF THE DEATH OF HIS CREWMAN IN A TRAINING ACCIDENT BEFORE THE OPERATION; AND LIEUTENANT COMMANDER KATSUHISA BAN OF THE SYDNEY ATTACK GROUP WHO WAS LOST, PRESUMED DEAD.
