English: Motte and bailey of the original castle at Middleham built on Williams Hill. The keep was built on the central mound, protected by a ditch that is clearly visible. The bailey (which is not visible in this image) is on the other side of the motte. This photograph was taken from Middleham Castle, a distance of about 350 metres.
