Summary

Description
English: Built in 1848 by Andrew Geddes Bain and named for the surveyor-general of the Cape, Charles Colliers Michell, Michell's Pass replaced the precipitous Mostertshoek Pass build by Jan Mostert in 1765. This toll house dates from the same year, 1848, and is not identical with the first toll house, of which ruins remain near the top of Mostertshoek Pass. At the time of its construction, the 1848 toll house was situated further from the road than it is today. Michell's Pass was much improved during WW2 and in 1988-92 so that little of Bain's original work is currently visible.
