Title: Miami Biltmore Hotel: Coral Gables, Florida

Date: January 18, 1926

General note: The Miami Biltmore Hotel opened in January 1926 at the peak of the Florida land boom. The hotel was built by Coral Gables developer George E. Merrick and hotel magnate John McEntee Bowman. During World War II, the hotel served as an Army Air Forces Regional Hospital. Until 1968, the Biltmore housed the University of Miami's School of Medicine and served as a VA hospital. The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996. The City of Coral Gables restored the hotel between 1983 and 1987 and today it is once again recognized as a world-class hotel.
