Cette "vitrine pour objets d'art" a été commandée en 1893 à François-Rupert Carabin (1862-1932) par la ville de Paris.

Elle a été exposée en 1895 au salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts.

F.-R. Carabin s'est consacré la plus grande partie de sa carrière à la sculpture sur bois et à la création de meubles.

Le corps féminin occupe dans ses oeuvres une place très importante, comme chez la plupart des artistes de la période 1900.

Toutefois, il a pris toujours le même modèle féminin : une femme musclée qu'il décline en fonction de ses créations.
