http://www.wilhelmkruecken.de/Etzlaub/etzlaub.htm On the original image the appended Mercator scale is hardly visible. Two clearer scales have been added. On the left is a version of Mercator adjusted to fit with Erzlaub at 60 degrees. The agreement of scale is fortuitous. On the right is a Mercator scale adjusted to have the same width as Erzlaub's at the equator. The monochrome map has been replaced by a coloured version from http://www.wilhelmkruecken.de/Etzlaub/etzlaub.htm (Inverted to make the map recognisable at the expense of making the text inverted. The following text is from the original image (File:Erhard Etzlaub 1511 Sundial miniature map.png). Miniature map from outside of hinged lid of Etzlaub's 1511 sundial. Size is 93x65 mm, orientation is "South-up", no longitudes are given. Latitudes printed in grey numbers (see right margin) were calculated by Krücken (2004, see "Source") for a Mercator projection of same area and prove that Etzlaub's approach was completely different. These maps were designed to adjust sundials (called "Kompast" [sic!] in late medieval German) for user's latitude. Instructions were given by Etzlaub in Codex ad Compastum Norembergensem which was kept by Staatsbibliothek, Munich, Germany, but seems lost. |
