Summary

Description
English: A recipient of the Pro Patria Medal that was mentioned in dispatches during the 1966-1989 Border War in South Africa was entitled to wear a miniature Coat of Arms on the ribbon. The Pro Patria Medal was instituted in 1974 and was awarded to serving members of the South African Defence Force for a period of 55 days continuous or 90 days non-continuous duty in an operational area as designated by the minister, in service in the defence of the RSA for the suppression or prevention of terrorrism. The medal was struck in bronze and gold plated and the original medals were attached to the ribbon bar with two rings that enabled it to swing. Subsequent versions, like the example depicted, were struck with the ribbon bar as an integral part of the medal.
