Menoceras barbouri Wood, 1964 - fossil rhinoceros skeleton (male) from the Miocene of Nebraska, USA. (UNSM 1241, Nebraska State Museum of Natural History, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA) Formerly known as Diceratherium niobrarensis and Menoceras falkenbachi. From museum signage: During the Early and Middle Miocene, 15-20 million years ago, rhinos of this type were very abundant in what is now Nebraska. Diceratheres differed from other rhinoceroses in that the horns of the males grew side-by-side on the skull, instead of one behind the other. The female skulls were hornless, as illustrated by the skeleton on the right. Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Mammalia, Perissodactyla, Rhinocerotidae Stratigraphy: lower Marsland Formation, Middle Miocene Locality: Bridgeport Quarries, James Lister Ranch, ~9.5 miles north of the town of Bridgeport, Morrill County, western Nebraska, USA See info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menoceras |
