Description

The anonymous master was one of the most important artists working in Upper Swabia and the Middle Rhine around the middle of the 15th century. His “notname” name is derived from two wings of a large altarpiece with scenes from the Passion, Christ Carrying the Cross and the Crucifixion of Christ, now in the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt.

The four large panel paintings in the Berlin Gemäldegalerie once formed the front and reverse of two movable wings that belonged toa monumental altarpiece, at the centre of which a crowded Calvary was depicted. This central panel had been in Saint Martin’s church in Bad Orb in the Spessart region, where it was destroyed by a fire in 1983.
