Object type painting
object_type QS:P31,Q3305213
Description
English: Portrait of Sultan Mehmed II with a young dignitary, oil on pine panel, 33 by 45.7 cm.; 13 by 18 in. Estimate 300,000 — 500,000 GBP. Photo Sotheby's. This panel is one of only three surviving contemporary or near-contemporary oil paintings depicting the great Sultan Mehmed II Fatih (1430–81), and the last to remain in private hands. It is the only known painting to depict the Sultan with another sitter. It has remained in the collection of the descendants of the family who first bought it back in the early nineteenth century, and appears here on the open market almost certainly for the first time in its history.
