Notes The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire - Officer (Mil) (OBE) GV Lt. Col. Albert Henry Sage MM, NZ Engineers, WW2 Mr Bert Sage, special officer with the New Zealand Railways, entered camp in 1940 with the formation of the Railways Operating Companies of the 2nd NZEF. He enlisted with the rank of major and was appointed to the command of the 17th Railway Operating Company, NZ Engineers and in August 1940 was promoted lieutenant-colonel. He left New Zealand with the 3rd Echelon in command of the NZ Railway Operating Group, NZ Engineers and served in the Middle East until June 1943 when he returned to New Zealand. In recognition of his war services he was awarded the OBE (Military Division) in 1942 and was also mentioned in dispatches.
