Notes Reverend Archie Wharton Ellesmere Silvester of Auckland served as a Methodist Missionary on Vella La Vella during WW2. During 1943 he helped hide 165 survivors from the USS Helena for 8 days as arrangements were made for their rescue. On 12 January 1946 President Harry Truman awarded him the US Order of Merit for "extraordinary fidelity and exceptionally meritorious conduct." (see further details on person file)
