Ifhe should notice, how would he know themeaning of the scant crops of hay and po-tatoes, or of the empty stall ? Sealed tohim is the pathos in the history of the own-ers of the stone farm. His thoughtsscarcely glance at the piteous wife plaitingstraw hats; the only son, whose rare hap-piness consists in a barn dance in the vil-lage three miles below, and whose largeeyes contract with increasing age, and loseall expression except that of anxiety.
