Though the back cover of the book shows no copyright notice, later editions were copyrighted on the back cover. Since the entire book was not available to check for other places any copyright notice may have been printed, a search for renewal was done in both books and periodicals for the years 1960 and 1961. There were no listings for either General Foods Corporation or the Maxwell House brand.
A renewal check for the 1939 book in years 1966 and 1967 also found no renewals for either General Foods or Maxwell House. There's no evidence of General Foods renewing any copyrights on these older books.
Note that it may still be copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works (depending on the date of the author's death), such as Canada (70 years p.m.a.), Mainland China (50 years p.m.a., not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany (70 years p.m.a.), Mexico (100 years p.m.a.), Switzerland (70 years p.m.a.), and other countries with individual treaties.
