Le socle présente les masques de Corot, Dumas, Berlioz, Carpeaux, Faure, Delacroix, Balzac et Barbey d'Aurevilly. Dans la main gauche se trouve le masque de Victor Hugo. Trois autres masques qui étaient suspendus au poignet droit ont disparu : il s'agissait de ceux de Gambetta, Gounod et de Théodore de Banville. L'acquisition du modèle en plâtre et la commande du bronze ont été faites par l'Etat en vertu d'une décision ministérielle en date du 17 février 1883. Par un arrêté du 20 novembre 1886, cette oeuvre a été attribuée au Jardin du Luxembourg.
