Description

In 1976 S. Dillon Ripley (1913-2001), ornithologist and eighth Smithsonian Secretary made a trip to India to conduct research with Salim Ali for their Handbook of the Birds of India and Pakistan.

  • Left to right in first row: An unidentified person, Salim Ali (1896-1987), Ripley's wife Mary Livingston Ripley (d. 1996), and Ripley sit on a hillside in India.
  • Left to right in back row: An unidentified man holding binoculars, and Mr P.B. Shekar, one time collections specialist of the Bombay Natural History Society, and a regular camp member of Dr. Ripley's expeditions in India.
