Summary

Description
English: Mary D. Diehl and L. M. Gillespie (at left and right) were two of the first female police officers ever hired by the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are shown wearing their police badges in this photograph that was published in multiple newspapers across the United States in 1913, including on page 7 of the "Des Moines Tribune" on June 10, 1913. I cropped and sepia-toned this public domain image on April 17, 2023 to make it freely available to history teachers, students and other members of the general public.
