Notes

Michael Hogan purchased this three-masted, square-rigged ship with three decks, weighing 654 tons, length 104 feet, breadth 34 feet, in 1791 from Gillett, Lambert & Ross while under construction. It was initially registered as "Il Netunno", trading between India and Europe, under Genoese colours to avoid the East India Company monopoly. In Calcutta in 1793 Hogan commissioned the Flemish artist Francois Balthazar Solvyns to paint the Netunno. Two versions were painted, one under sail (ML 1353) and the other at anchor (Private Collection). Marine painter, Solvyns was born in Antwerp, he lived in Calcutta from 1791 to 1803 and during this time produced a collection of etchings depicting the manners, customs and dresses of the Hindus with accompanying descriptive text. In 1794 Hogan registered the ship "Marquis Cornwallis" under the British flag and in 1795 transported Irish convicts to New South Wales for the British Government.
