Description

Maria Bellet Browne (1786-1828) - Portrait Miniature of Mrs Thomas Browne, signed (M B Browne) and inscribed on the reverse Maria Browne Pinxt/Mrs General Browne, ivory, 90 x 71mm, in the original Indian horn frame with gilt brass hanger

Literature: Ormond (R) - Chinnery and his Pupil Mrs Browne, Walpole Society, vol XLIV 1972-1974, pp123-214, listed under Works by Mrs Browne: 1812 "Mrs Col T Browne", again under 1813 and under Copies of Miniatures: "Mrs General Browne 1816".

The artist was the daughter of Arundel Roberts and his wife Mary, nee Bellet. She married at Calcutta in 1806 Lt Col Marmaduke Williamson Browne (1777-1833) of the H.E.I.C.

The sitter's husband (Thomas Browne of the 69th Regiment of Foot) was appointed Major General in 1813, which leaves open the possibility that this newly discovered miniature could be any of those executed in 1812, 13 or 16.
