Description	Picture of Christina Fernandez's multimedia installation Maria's Great Expedition (1996-1997) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., in 2023. Seven black frames hang on a wall, with the first containing a map of Mexico and the southern United States with a red line marking a meandering journey between the two countries. The other six frames each contain a photograph of the artist, dressed in different costumes to appear like her great-grandmother during various stages of her life. From the first photograph on the left, the images depict the artist staring solemnly out of frame wearing a dress and shawl; the artist standing in front of a clothesline and several early 20th century laundry supplies; the artist working at the side of a railroad track; the artist working among wooden crates in a field; the artist posing for a portrait in the front lawn of an apartment building with a clothesline behind her; and, lastly, the artist standing in a kitchen holding several cooking utensils, staring at the camera with a visibly hunched neck. Each photograph is visually distinct, having been made with different photographic techniques, and the final photograph is the only image in color. Panels of text in English and Spanish are placed below each photograph on tilted platforms, describing the artist's great-grandmother's journey through various stages of her life, in a style similar to an ethnographic or history museum's didactic text. The entire installation resembles a type of historical display common in western museums.
