Summary

Description
English: A derelict Manchester Central Station
The station was originally built in 1880 for the Cheshire Lines Committee, made up of the Great Northern Railway, the Midland Railway and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. Its 210 foot wide and 90 foot high arch was only slightly smaller than that of St Pancras Station in London (243 foot wide), with which it had a direct connection by the Midland Railway route via Derby.

Manchester Central closed in 1969 and laid derelict for a number of years (as here), before being listed in 1983. In 1986 it was reopened as the GMEX Centre (see SJ8397 : GMEX centre Manchester for corresponding view now).

In the background is the tower of Manchester Town Hall.
