Opened in 1917 under the leadership of Priscilla Crabb, president of Palmerston North Women's Christian Temperance Union, it served as a hostel for soldiers' wives and children during World War I then a home for orphaned or indigent children (housing as many as 19 children and 2 staff by the 1920s).
