As an initiator of bold and unconstrained style of ink landscape paintings, Shen Zhou has been regarded as a leading figure of the "Wu School" of literati paintings during the mid and late Ming dynasty. He was skilled in employing simple and free ink wash to portray beautiful and fresh landscapes. This painting depicts the scene when the painter was making his farewell to Wu Kuan, a good friend of him, at Jingkou.
