Summary
DescriptionMain St 164, Lawrence House, Penn Yan HD 03.JPG |
English: The Samuel Lawrence House, 164 Main Street, Penn Yan, New York, September 2015. A contributing property to the NRHP-listed Penn Yan Historic District, the Lawrence House is emblematic of two different eras of architectural history. The structure itself dates to c. 1825 and is Greek Revival in style, with the characteristic low-pitched front-gabled roof, prominent horizontal delineation between the roof and lower floors, and symmetrical façade with large windows. Subsequently, a c. 1866 renovation added prominent details in the then-trendy Italianate style, such as the scroll-sawn brackets supporting the eaves of the roof and the ornate detailing on the front porch and side entrance. A towering figure in Penn Yan's earliest history, Samuel Lawrence (1778-1841) was the son of one of the first white pioneers to settle in the region, and would grow up to distinguish himself in local politics: he served first as Milo Town Supervisor, then was elected in 1818 to the New York State Assembly, then in 1821 was appointed sheriff of Ontario County (of which Penn Yan was a part until 1823). It's not certain that Lawrence was the first to live in the house - he purchased the property in 1826 from Elijah Ryno who'd owned it for two years at the time he sold, and who, given his occupation as a bricklayer, may well have been its builder and first inhabitant - but he was certainly its longest-tenured early inhabitant; he lived there until his death, and his widow Polly stayed eight years longer.
