Summary
DescriptionMahadeva temple, Mandi Bamora, Madhya Pradesh 005.jpg |
English: The Mahadeva temple of Mandi Bamora, sometimes referred to as the Shiva temple of Bamora or Hajariya Mahadev mandir, is a much-damaged Paramara era stone temple about 10 kilometers southwest of the Ancient Hindu site of Eran (Airan). The temple faces east, had a large mandapa, antarala and additional shrines. However, the Sultanate era invasions destroyed this and other temples of Bamora area. When Henry Cousens visited this site in the 19th-century, he saw only the mandapa pillars with some beams, along with a shell of the original tall Nagara shikhara.
The surviving panels and the doorway of this Shiva temple are exquisitely carved with Hindu artwork, though most of the reliefs are defaced. The lalatabimba has Vishnu, flanked by Brahma and Shiva – suggesting that the original temple may have been dedicated to a Vishnu avatara. The ruins were likely reclaimed after the collapse of the Mughal empire. Inside the current sanctum is a sahasralinga (a linga with 1000 sub-linga reliefs), whose relative location suggests that this was re-added by regional Hindus in the 18th or 19th-century. Near the main temple are the foundations and remains of other smaller shrines. The temple premises and the sanctum contain numerous panels from lost Hindu and Jain temples. These include mutilated statues of Vishnu, Shakti and Tirthankaras. Given the damage, it is difficult to firmly date this temple beyond 900-1100 CE period. |
