Summary

Description
English: These flags were flown from the masthead of the MS Maasdam during a southbound transit of the Panama Canal from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. The Maasdam is a Dutch registered cruise ship of Holland America Line. The three international maritime signal flags next to the Panamanian flag are (from top to bottom) the flags for the numbers 1, 2 and the letter Z. Ships on a southbound transit of the Canal always bear even numbers. The Maasdam was the sixth ship that morning on a southbound transit, hence the number 12. The letter Z denotes a privilege ship. Privilege ships, usually cruise ships, pay more for the transit of the Canal, but don't have to wait their turn at the entrance of the Canal. The flag seen between the ship's whistle and the radar antenna is the international maritime signal flag for the letter H, which indicates the presence of a pilot on board.
