Description

De twee kussende babies zijn Jezus en zijn zes maanden oudere neefje Johannes. De ontmoeting is niet in de bijbel beschreven. De gebeurtenis is gebaseerd op apocriefe geschriften en middeleeuwse legenden waarin wordt verteld over de vlucht naar Egypte en de terugkeer van de Heilige Familie.

De medaillons verwijzen naar verhalen uit de klassieke oudheid. De medaillons links met Antigone en Oedipus verbeelden de liefde tussen ouders en kind. De medaillons aan de rechterzijde met Dido en Aeneas zijn symbool voor de liefde tussen man en vrouw. De twee kussende kinderen verbinden bijbelse en humanistische opvattingen over het gezin. Hierdoor was de compositie ook geliefd bij verzamelaars met interesse in mythologie.
