Summary

Description
English: Historic auxiliary powered vessel Krake (= octopus) with identification number ZK 14 (= Zoutkamp harbour, The Netherlands) and DGIC as its call signal in the harbour of Emden, East Frisia, Germany. This sailing ship (Dutch barge, type Blazer) originally made of oak wood is a special construction for cargo and fishery in the shallow waters of the Wadden Sea. Its flat bottom enables the ship during tidal flats to rest on the sea ground. The picture from a contemporary printed postcard was made between 1934 and 1938. During this time the Krake was owned by the German author and progressive pedagogue Martin Luserke (1880–1968) who used the ship as his floating poet's workshop. In many harbours of The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, South Norway and South Sweden mostly younger people visited the ship for his readings or taletelling and some even went with him and his son Dieter Luserke (1918–2005) on cruise. One of the later prominent passengers was Beate Uhse (1919–2001) who attended Schule am Meer on the German island Juist which Martin Luserke had founded in 1925.
