Summary

Description

English: Ludwigsburg, Germany, Dreieinigkeitskirche (Trinity Church, usually just called the Catholic Church locally) on the market square: deliberately defocused shot of the Christmas tree next to the altar and one of the church windows in the apse.

At the same time an example photo for the special bokeh (the quality of the out-of-focus rendering) of the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS lens, the smooth trans-focus effect.

  • This exposure was taken with open aperture (ƒ/2.8 = T5.6), this setting produces the strongest STF effect.
  • Due to the design of the lens, there is virtually no vignetting, therefore the blur disks (a.k.a. bokeh balls, etc.) form perfect circles up to the edge of the image.
  • The apodization element softens the blurred area so that it should show no distracting sharp contours and light points largely merge.
  • As this shot represents an extreme case, some of the blur disks still show a delicate outline and their lighting decreases towards their border (in accordance with the increasing density of the apodization element); in general, however, the bokeh is soft and free of interference.
The photo may bewilder the viewer at the first glance because it does not contain any focused elements. Typically, a sharp subject element contrasts with the blurred foreground and background. This has been omitted here, as the subject of the image is precisely the blur. The shot can also be used as an atmospheric background.
