Description Photograph of Lieutenant George H. Ludlow, US Navy, seated in an Italian-built Macchi M.5 flying boat (left). Ludlow flew a dropping mission to the Austrian-Hungarian port of Pola in the Adriatic Sea. Inset is a photograph of Ensign Charles H. Hammann, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing Ludlow on 21 August 1918 after his plane was disabled by enemy fire.
