Lucy had to travel on foot with her daughter and other slaves thirty some odd miles from Grays Creek, Tennessee across the Hatchie River to the fairgrounds at Bolivar, Tennessee to escape to freedom. She begged for protection from Indiana's 23rd Infantry and they accepted her and gave her work during the war and afterwards in New Albany, Indiana.
