Description |
Sculpture installation, The Tower of Babel, by Lothar Osterburg (wood, cardstock, book pages, dimensions varying, 7' x 7' x 28', 2017). The image illustrates a distinct type of work—sculpture—and series (his "Babel" works, which included sculpture, video and photogravure prints) in Lothar Osterburg's career in the 2010s. The Tower of Babel is a spiraling 28-foot sculpture built entirely from old books—in 25 languages, all found in Brooklyn)—which dwarfs a model modern metropolis and is surrounded by floating dirigibles and satellites. This particular installation was at the Esther Massry Gallery, Albany, New York in 2017. This work has been publicly exhibited in prominent venues in different recreations, and discussed widely in national art and daily press publications. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a distinct type of work in Lothar Osterburg's career in the 2010s: his sculpture, as well as a key series, his "Babel" works, which included sculpture, video and photogravure prints. During this time, Osterburg's sculpture and models (in addition to his already-known printmaking) came to the forefront in several exhibitions, including one at Grand Central Terminal in New York. The spiraling 28-foot sculpture was built entirely from old books (in 25 languages, all found in Brooklyn), and was influenced by Bruegel's "The Tower of Babel" works. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize a key, distinct body of work (sculpture), which brought new recognition from art journals, daily press publications, and museums and arts institutions. Osterburg's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article. |

Other information |
The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made. |
