Summary

Description
  • Scientific Name: Pinus contorta Douglas ex Loudon subsp. latifolia (Engelm.) Critchfield
  • Common Name: Lodgepole Pine
  • Certainty: positive (notes)
  • Location: Canadian Rockies; Wells Gray Provincial Park; Edgewood Blue
These are the pollen-bearing cones. Never thought of these as being beautiful before, but they really are. I've read several places that you can shake the pollen out of these into a basket and collect a sort of yellow "flour" that can be added to pancakes or break dough. It is very high in protein. However, when I tried it once in LA, I just ended up with pine-resin-flavored pancakes! Maybe some species are better than others; the one I tried was Canary Island Pine, I think.
