Summary
[edit]Description |
A cropped frame from a video of a live colossal squid at the surface, recorded by Ivan Istomin from a research vessel in the D'Urville Sea off Antarctica in January 2008. The animal was pulled to the surface feeding on a line-caught toothfish. The colossal squid's light pink pigmentation had never been observed before (dead or dying specimens invariably have reddish skin, if it is present at all). |

Purpose of use |
As a frame from one of the first recordings of a live colossal squid, the image depicts a historically significant and widely reported event. It is intended to show: (a) a representative image of the event itself; (b) the light pink colouration of the specimen in its live state, which has never been observed before and is relevant to a discussion about the commonly seen maroon colouration possibly being a stress response; and (c) the natural proportions and posture of the colossal squid when swimming freely, documented here for the first time, which can only be seen in a live animal and cannot be conveyed in text alone. |
Replaceable? |
Irreplaceable as it depicts a historical event of which no free images exist. |
